[History and Theory of New Media] Path of Inquiry: Virtual Worlds and Gaming
My proposed path of inquiry is how new media relates to virtual worlds and gaming. Virtual worlds are spaces on where real people can create “avatars” that represent them, often online where they can interact with other people’s avatars. Video games are - with the exception of massive multiplayer online (MMO) games - closed environments where the avatars are typically “heroes” in a made-up world.
I am choosing this topic because it is of personal interest to me as an avid "gamer". I have been playing video games - mainly story-driven role playing games (RPGs) - since middle school, and have always been interested in the technology that makes them work and developing technologies. Now that games are moving into virtual reality (VR), new media is becoming more relevant than ever. In addition, this blog is dual hatted for the History and Theory of New Media and Information Design - from programming, visuals, story writing, and more, it is hard to think of another topic more suited to finding connections between the two topics than virtual worlds and gaming.
In the future, I’d like to see how different types of games and media have affected and influenced each other. From the creation of digital board games, and applying tabletop RPG principles to virtual worlds to create fun combat systems for games, there are many surprising interconnections. I would like to find more connections that I was unaware of, and explore the philosophies that drive creators in the industry and how they contribute to the creation of new technology.
